President’s Message: Tyler Holtz ’07 Honored by Freedom Has A Face Foundation

president's message logoOn Friday November 7, 2014, as part of a very poignant and touching pre-game ceremony at the Mater Dei/Orange Lutheran Varsity Football game at the Santa Ana Stadium, the Freedom Has A Face Foundation (FHAF) presented Coach Bruce Rollinson and the 2014 Monarch Varsity Football captains with a beautiful bronze plaque honoring Tyler Holtz ’07, a member of the Varsity Football team in 2005 and 2006.

On September 24, 2011, Sgt. Tyler Holtz, on his 4th tour of duty in Afghanistan, was leading his 2nd Battalion 75 Army Ranger Regiment on a dangerous mission when he was killed in action. He was only 22 years old.

The Freedom Has A Face Foundation is a non-profit organization out of Spokane, WA dedicated to bringing the memory of all U.S. military killed in action into the hearts and minds of everyday Americans. Tyler Holtz was the first (of what FHAF hopes will be many) U.S. servicemen honored in such a manner at their high school alma maters. FHAF produced a wonderful video tribute to Tyler and it was dedicated as part of the pre-game ceremony at the Santa Ana Stadium on November 7. CLICK HERE to view the video.

Following the game in the MD Grotto, members of Tyler Holtz’s Army Ranger unit spoke to our MD Varsity Football team and their parents and supporters at the Sentinels of Freedom Memorial Garden, regarding Tyler’s character, courage and heroism. Then in a private ceremony with the Holtz Family, the special FHAF memorial plaque was exhibited in its final resting place on the Mater Dei High School campus, prominently centered between Mater Dei’s display cases for our two Heisman Trophy winners, John Huarte ’61 and Matt Leinart ’01 at the main entrance to the Meruelo Athletic Center.

Please support the Freedom Has A Face Foundation’s efforts to honor other military men and women killed in action at their high school alma maters by purchasing a Tyler Holtz memorial coin. Coins are $20 and shipping is free. To purchase, please contact Kathleen Kelly, Director of Alumni Relations & Giving at  or visit to make your purchase today.
