Mater Dei’s Elise Zappia, after the recently concluded beach season, was named an honorable mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. This was the first year Mater Dei competed as a school in beach volleyball. Zappia, a graduating senior at Mater Dei, will play sand volleyball next year at UCLA.
Let’s Call It A Year
Below is a summary of the 2014 spring sports season at Mater Dei.
Gained an at-large playoff berth with a fourth-place finish in the Trinity League…posted a 7-4 come-from-behind win over Valley View in the wild card round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs…season ended with a loss to Capo Valley, 4-1.
Finished second in the Trinity League…won the CIF-SS Western Division Championship, the first team title in the sport for the Monarchs…participated in the CIF-SCGA Team Qualifier and posted a third-place finish to advance to the CIF-SCGA…came in third place in the CIF-SCGA and qualified for the CIF-State Championship…finished fifth in the CIF-State Championship.
Selected to participate in the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Playoffs…lost to San Clemente, 15-3, in the first round.
Trinity League champions…was victorious over Newport Harbor, 10-2, in the first round of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Playoffs…fell to Beckman in the second round, 13-11.
Came in third place in the Trinity League…eliminated from the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs with a 3-2 loss to Riverside Poly.
Posted a second-place in the Trinity League…five swimmers advanced from the CIF-SS Prelims to the CIF-SS Finals…finished 20th in the CIF-SS Finals.
Finished second in the Trinity League…advanced five swimmers from the CIF-SS Prelims to the CIF-SS Finals…ended its season in the CIF-SS Finals, finishing in 14th place.
Qualified for the postseason by finishing third in the Trinity League…bowed out in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs with a 14-4 loss to San Clemente.
Track & Field (Boys)
Second place finish in the Trinity League…had 10 individuals move on from the CIF-SS Prelims to the CIF-SS Division 2 Finals…finished first the CIF-SS Division 2 Finals, the first boys’ track and field championship in school history…CIF-SS Division 2 Individual Champions included Curtis Godin (100m and 200m) and Malik McMorris (discus and shot put)…advanced five individuals from the CIF Masters Meet to the CIF-State Finals…finished first in the CIF-State Finals, again capturing a title that had never been won before at Mater Dei…Godin was the CIF-State Individual Champion in the 100m and 200m.
Track & Field (Girls)
Trinity League champions…advanced nine individuals from the CIF-SS Prelims to the CIF-SS Division 2 Finals…posted a third place finish in the CIF-SS Division 2 Finals…Ashlyn Rambo (800m), Emma Radan (100h), and McKenna Caskey (Pole Vault) each were CIF-SS Division 2 Individual Champions…five individuals qualified for the CIF-State Finals from the CIF Masters Meet…ended the season with a 33rd place finish in the CIF-State Finals.
Did not qualify for the playoffs.
