At a recent all-school spirit rally, members of the Mater Dei Wrestling Program, led by Luis Renteria, the Monarchs’ third-year head coach, were honored for their continued momentum-building achievements over the course of the 2013-14 season.
Among those honored were Sophomores Julie Calzada and Gracie Unland, the first female wrestlers in school history. Calzada qualified for the CIF Girls Masters Meet and the CIF-State Girls Championships. She also finished third for her grade level in the USA Wrestling State Girls Championships. Unland advanced to the CIF Girls Masters Meet and placed fifth among sophomores in the USA Wrestling State Championships.
Sophomore Jed Smith was recognized for being a Trinity League champion; finishing second in the CIF-SS Individual Championships; advancing to the CIF Masters Meet; capturing the title for his weight class and grade level at the USA Wrestling State Championships; and participating in the USA Wrestling National Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Finally, Trevor Perez, a junior, was saluted for being crowned champion at both the Trinity League Finals and the CIF-SS Individual Championships. Perez is the first Monarch to win a CIF-SS individual championship since 2007 and only the ninth wrestler in school history to do so. He also went on the participate in the CIF Masters Meet and CIF-State Championships before his season came to an end.
