On the Sidelines: MD is CA State School of the Year & 2013 Fall Season Begins

For the fourth time in its history, Mater Dei was distinguished as the State School of the Year in athletics for the 2012-13 school year by Cal-Hi Sports.  The accolade was also presented to the Monarchs after the 1991-92, 1994-95, and 1996-97 school years.

Patriotic Water Polo

Mackenzie Barr (Class of 2013), who will attend UCLA this fall, was selected to represent the United States at the 2013 FINA World Women’s Junior Water Polo Championships in Volos, Greece.  The United States went on to win the gold medal.  Similarly, Mater Dei senior McQuin Baron and his former teammate, Bret Bonanni ’12, now at Stanford, both were chosen to play on the United States team at the 2013 FINA World Men’s Junior Water Polo Championships in Szombathely, Hungary.  The United States finished fifth in the event.

At a recent all-school spirit rally, the following varsity teams for the 2013 fall sports season were introduced to the student body:

  • Tennis (Girls) and Dana Bozeman in his first year as the Mater Dei head coach (he served last season in an interim capacity)
  • Cross Country (Boys and Girls) and Rick Martinez in his 22nd year as the Mater Dei head coach
  • Golf (Girls) and Ollie Martin in his 13th year as the Mater Dei head coach
  • Volleyball (Girls) and Dan O’Dell in his first year as the Mater Dei head coach
  • Water Polo (Boys) and Chris Segesman in his ninth year as the Mater Dei head coach
  • Football and Head Coach, Bruce Rollinson in his 25th year as the Mater Dei head coach
