January 19 – We hit the ground running. Upon arrival, our students started their journey at the Washington Monument. The temperature during this picture was a brisk 33 degrees and it was 4:00 a.m. our time, but our Monarchs roared on. We toured the United States Holocaust Museum, enjoyed a walk through the National Mall, and toured the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. After dinner the students and their new friends from Mississippi and Tennessee geared up for night tour of Washington DC.
January 20 – Our day started with a tour at Arlington National Cemetery. The students watched the Changing of the Guard Ritual at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and learned about the history of Arlington National Cemetery. Our DC tour continued at Mount Vernon before heading to an Inaugural Ball Dinner.
January 21 – Inauguration Day! We head out at 5:00 a.m. to secure our spot in the National Mall for the 2013 Presidential Inauguration. We walked for several miles through barricaded areas before arriving at our destination. When we made our last turn into the National Mall we saw this beautiful sunrise over the Capitol building.
