Fire Up the Scissor Lift

Four more championship banners, the CIF-SS and CIF-State for girls’ basketball, and the CIF-SS and CIF-State for boys’ basketball, were unveiled at a recent all-school rally.  With these newest additions, 84 championship banners now hang from the rafters of the Meruelo Athletic Center, broken down as follows:

  • 63 CIF-SS Championships
  • 1 CIF Southern California Regional Championship
  • 15 CIF-State Championships
  • 5 National Championships

…And They All Lived Happily Ever After

With the final postseason honors being announced, the curtain has dropped on the high school basketball season.  Taking a look back, the individual resumes compiled by members of both the Mater Dei girls’ and boys’ teams during the 2011-12 campaign are, well…, you decide:

  • Won league titles in each of his 21 years as a high school girls’ basketball head coach
  • 4 CIF Section Championships as the head coach at Mater Dei (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012)
  • 5 CIF Section Championships as the head coach at Troy (2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006)
  • 1 CIF Section Championship as the head coach at La Quinta (1990)
  • 3 CIF State Championships as the head coach at Mater Dei (2010, 2011, 2012)
  • 3 CIF State Championships as the head coach at Troy (2003, 2005, 2006)
  • Won more CIF State Championships than any head coach in the history of California high school basketball
  • 2 National Championships as the head coach at Mater Dei (2010, 2011)
  • Compiled a 156 – 7 career coaching record (a .940 winning percentage) in five seasons as the head coach at Mater Dei

Gary McKnight

  • Spent his entire career as the high school boys’ basketball head coach at Mater Dei

  • 21 CIF Section Championships as the head coach at Mater Dei (1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2012)
  • Won more CIF Section Championships than any head coach in the history of California high school basketball
  • 9 CIF State Championships as the head coach at Mater Dei (1987, 1990, 1995, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012)
  • Won more CIF State Championships than any head coach in the history of California high school basketball
  • Compiled a 926 – 82 career coaching record (a .919 winning percentage) in 30 seasons as the head coach at Mater Dei
  • Won more games than any head coach in the history of California high school basketball
