National Notice

Displaying its depth and showing resolve when it was necessary, the Mater Dei baseball team won the inaugural National High School Invitational in Cary, NC.  En route to the championship, Mater Dei beat three nationally ranked teams with a 10-3 win #2 Bishop Gorman (Nevada), a 12-0 shellacking of #1 Carroll (Texas) and, in the championship game, a 3-2 victory over #10 Harvard Westlake in eight innings.  Unbeaten in four tournament games, the Monarchs also beat Sarasota (Florida), 5-1.  Playing from behind in the championship game, Ryan McMahon homered to right in the fourth inning to cut the Harvard Westlake lead in half, 2-1.  With Davis Tominaga and Ty Moore coming on in relief to hold Harvard Westlake scoreless from the fourth inning, the Monarchs did not score again until, with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Tominaga hit a solo homerun to tie the score, 2-2.  After loading the bases in the bottom of the eighth, Ryan Barr singled to score Moore with the winning run, giving Mater Dei the tournament championship.
