The Amazing Run

For the fourth straight year, the Mater Dei boys’ water polo team hung a championship banner from rafters in the Meruelo Athletic Center.  Capped by an 8-5 win over El Toro in the CIF-SS Division 1 championship game, Mater Dei finished the season undefeated with a perfect 31-0 record.  The Monarchs recorded 484 goals while giving up only 174, outscoring opponents during the 2011 campaign by an average of 10 goals per outing (15.6 to 5.6).  Bret Bonanni led the Monarchs with 124 goals on the season, while Jon Walters also passed the century mark, putting the ball in the back of the net 101 times.  Dating back to the 2010 season, Mater Dei has now won 47 straight games, the longest win streak in the history of CIF-SS boys’ water polo.  Over the past four years, the Monarchs have been victorious in 112 of their 128 games, a pristine .875 winning percentage.

Speaking of Amazing…

Putting the finishing touches on an incredible career at Mater Dei, Bret Bonanni, for the second consecutive season, was named the CIF-SS Division 1 Player of the Year.  As a result, Bonanni had his robe and cap retired in the school’s Hall of Fame.  During his four years as a varsity player, Bonanni scored 417 goals (37 as a freshman, 100 as a sophomore, 156 as a junior, and 124 as a senior).  Most impressively, though, Bonanni never lost his last game of the season as a high school athlete, taking part in an incredible four CIF-SS championships.  Bonanni was also named the Orange County Register Player of the Year, again being named the recipient of the award for the second straight year.

Fabric Count

With the latest boys’ water polo championship, 80 championship banners now hang from the rafters in the Meruelo Athletic Center.  The breakdown is as follows:

  • 61 CIF-SS Championships
  • 1 CIF Southern California Regional Championship
  • 13 CIF-State Championships
  • 5 National Championships
