Fall Sports Post Season Wrap

Cross Country (Boys)
Placed second as a team at the Trinity League Preview Meet, the team’s best finish since 1996…Michael Hulme was a top-7 finisher at the Orange County Championships and, as a result, earned all-county honors for the event as a freshman…went on to place fifth as a team in the Trinity League Finals and did not qualify for the CIF-SS playoffs…with a strong race in the Trinity League Finals, Thomas McGlone, a junior, qualified for the CIF-SS Prelims, but did advance to the CIF-SS Championships as an individual.

Cross Country (Girls)
Behind freshmen Megan Bartyczak and Kelly Peabody, the team placed second at the Nike Pre-National Invitational in Portland, Oregon…placed third as a team at the Trinity League Preview Meet…at the Apache Invitational Sarah Digiovanni, a junior, and Ashlyn Rambo, a sophomore,  broke the 17-minute mark for three miles, the fastest times at Mater Dei in over 25 years…placed third at the Trinity League Finals and qualified for the CIF-SS Prelims…the team ended its season with a 14th place finish at the CIF-SS Championships.

Football
Lost its first three games of the season to Carson (26-22), the CIF-City Division I runner-up; Corona Centennial (28-20), the CIF-SS Inland Division runner-up; and San Clemente (28-21 in overtime), the CIF-SS Pac 5 Division runner-up, by a total of 19 points…beat Edison 22-20 on a touchdown pass in the final seconds of regulation…opened Trinity League play with a 21-14 win over  Santa Margarita, the eventual CIF-SS Pac 5 champion, 21-14…suffered disappointing losses on the road against St. John Bosco and Orange Lutheran…lost a hard fought game at Angel Stadium against Trinity League rival Servite, 35-28…finished in fourth place in the Trinity League and, for the first time since 1986, did not qualify for the playoffs…Thomas Duarte, a junior, was named to the second team offense as a wide receiver.

Golf (Girls)
Finished in first place in the Trinity League…had an overall 11-1 record and ended the season as the #1 ranked team in the final poll by the Orange County Register…took fourth place in the CIF-SS Divisional Playoffs…advanced to the CIF-SS Team Playoffs and finished sixth…Jamie Harada, a sophomore, and Jakeishya Lee and Ashley Nguyen, both freshmen, all finished in the top seven of the Trinity League Finals to qualify for the CIF-SS Individual Regionals…all three golfers then advanced to the CIF-SS Individual Finals where their respective seasons came to an end…Harada was also honored on the Orange County Register’s second team.

Tennis (Girls)
Received a CIF-SS Division 1 playoff berth with a second place finish in the Trinity League…won a first round playoff match at Brentwood…lost in the second round to eventual Division 1 champion, Dana Hills.

Volleyball (Girls)
Won the Asics Challenge, going unbeaten in seven matches…finished second in the Trinity League and qualified for the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs…won a first round home match vs. Trabuco Hills, 25-12, 25-12, 25-23…hosted Santa Barbara in the second round and came away with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-19 win…upended Edison on the road in the quarterfinals, 25-13, 26-24, 18-25, 25-17…lost at Newport Harbor in the semifinals, 25-22, 18-25, 25-16, 25-22…finished the season with a 32-11 record…Sara Hughes, a junior, led the team with 653 assists and was named to the CIF-SS Division 1 first team…Annie Flynn, a senior, was selected to the Orange County Register second team…Frankie Shebby, a sophomore, recorded a team-high 326 kills…Kelli Ferraro, a junior, led the team with 224 digs.

Water Polo (Boys)
Went undefeated on the season with a 31-0 overall record…won the CIF-SS Division 1 Championship with an 8-5 win over El Toro…it was the program’s fourth consecutive CIF-SS championship…scored 484 goals (15.6 per game) while allowing only 174 (5.6 per game) during the 2011 campaign…for the season, Bret Bonanni, a senior, led the team with 124 goals and Jon Walters, a junior, recorded 101…goalie McQuin Baron, a sophomore, and Anthony Daboub, a senior, played key roles in anchoring the team’s defense…Bonanni was named the CIF-SS Division 1 Player of the Year and the Orange County Register Player of the Year, winning both awards for the second time in as many seasons…Daboub, James Walters, a sophomore, and Jon Walters were named to the CIF-SS Division 1 first team…Baron and Kent Inoue, a sophomore, were selected to the CIF-SS Division 1 second team and Patrick Woepse, a senior, earned CIF-SS Division 1 third team honors…Jon Walters was selected to the Orange County Register first team, while Baron, Daboub, and James Walters were named to the publication’s second team.
