Hanging from the Rafters

The Mater Dei girls’ track and field team was honored with the unveiling of the 2011 CIF-SS championship banner.  It is the first time a CIF-SS girls’ track and field championship team has been won at Mater Dei.  Gia Trevisan was a CIF-SS Division 2 individual champion in the 200 meter, while Lupe Medina, Ashlyn Rambo, Ellexi Snover, and Trevisan were CIF-SS Division 2 individual champions in the 1600 meter relay.  Trevisan set school records in the 100 meter (11.91), 200 meter (24.33) and 400 meter (56.46).  Jessie Stoneman, Medina, Snover, and Trevisan set a school record 47.98 in the 400 meter relay.  A school record 3:50.22 was also posted by Medina, Rambo, Snover, and Trevisan in the 1600 meter relay.  Fittingly, Rick Martinez was named the Orange County Register Coach of the Year.

Also making history at Mater Dei, the boys’ volleyball team hung its first banner after winning the 2011 CIF-SS Division 1 championship.  On what turned out to be a magical playoff run, the Monarchs upset #1-seeded Mira Costa at home in a thrilling five-game match, and then outlasted league rival and #2-seeded Santa Margarita in a pressure-packed five-game championship finale. John Henry was named to the CIF-SS Division 1 first team and the Orange County Register second team and John Zappia was named to the Orange County Register first team.  Adam Cutrell was honored as the CIF-SS Division 1 Coach of the Year and the Orange County Register Coach of the Year.

With the two most recent unveilings, 80 championship banners now hang from the rafters in the Meruelo Athletic Center.  The breakdown is as follows:

  • 61 CIF-SS Championships
  • 1 CIF Southern California Regional Championship
  • 13 CIF-State Championships
  • 5 National Championships

In leading his team to the boys’ volleyball championship, Zack La Cavera was named the CIF-SS Division 1 Player of the Year and, as a result, had his #14 Mater Dei jersey retired.  La Cavera, who now plays as a freshman at the University of California, Irvine, had 399 kills and 66 service aces on the season.  He was also named the Orange County Register Player of the Year.
