Mother-Son Mass & Brunch – May 1

Our Annual Celebration of Mothers and Sons took place on Sunday, May 1 at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Anaheim with over 500 in attendance.  We were so blessed to have so many young men from all four classes here at Mater Dei, their mothers and even some grandmothers join us in celebrating Mass and brunch on a beautiful spring day.

Austen Ward '12 and his mom, Kay bring up the gifts.

Numerous mothers and their sons shared in the leadership of our Mass as lectors, gift bearers, ushers and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion.  We were so honored to have Fr. John Weling ’72 serve as our celebrant. Fr. John was  President of Mater Dei when we celebrated the first Mother-Son Mass & Brunch in the 1990s.

Jeanette Costa and her son Zach '11

Ms. Jeanette Costa and her son Zach Costa ‘11 were among those who gave a personal reflection.  In creating letters of recommendation for her senior English students each year, Ms. Costa shared that she thinks of three words to describe that student to the college admissions offices.  She asked the mothers present to do the same exercise for their sons.

Keith Morton '11 and his mom, Mary.

Fresh from his four day performance in the ensemble of the Senior Musical – “The Wiz,” Keith Morton ‘11 sang “Through the Years” by Kenny Rogers and dedicated his performance to his mother, Mary. The words of this classic song and Keith’s beautiful voice truly reflected the spirit of this annual event and the love our young men feel for their mothers.

Cory Hahn '10

Cory Hahn ’10, supported by his mother Christine and younger brother Jason ‘12, gave a reflection on the importance of the young men loving their mothers.  “She will always stand by you,” he said. Cory’s words and reflections were uplifting, inspiring and faith-filled.  We are pleased to announce that our collection from the Mother-Son Mass & Brunch brought in more than $5,000 which will benefit the Cory Hahn Foundation.
