Mater Dei High School recently held its spring sports all-school spirit rally with each of the following varsity level teams being introduced to the student body:

Winter Sports Post Season Wrap-Up

Basketball (Boys)

Won the Trinity League and received the #2 seed in the CIF-SS Division 1AA playoffs…played host to Rancho Cucamonga in the first round hit and cruised to a 78-27 victory…stayed home in the second round of the playoffs and beat Rancho Verde, 58-46…went on the road in the quarterfinals and got an 82-62 win at Eisenhower…lost 60-58 to #3 seed Corona Centennial in the semifinals at the Anaheim Convention Center Arena…despite the semifinal loss in the CIF-SS playoffs, still qualified for the CIF-State Division I playoffs and was designated the #4 seed…got a 66-46 home win over Aliso Niguel in the first round…survived with a 72-70 victory at home over Loyola in the second round…went on the road and upset #1 seed Long Beach Poly in the regional semifinals, 72-55…got a 76-64 revenge victory over Corona Centennial in the regional finals at the USC Galen Center…travelled to Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento and, after trailing for much of the game, beat De La Salle for the state championship, 43-36…Xavier Johnson, a junior who averaged 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and shot 56.2 percent from the field this past season, was selected to the CIF-SS Division 1AA team and the Orange County Register first team…Katin Reinhardt, a junior who averaged 17.5 points per game, was also named to the CIF-SS Division 1AA team and the Orange County Register first team…Gary McKnight was honored as the Orange County Register Coach of the Year.

Basketball (Girls)

Went undefeated in Trinity League play but only received the #3 seed in the CIF-SS Division 1AA playoffs…beat M.L. King decisively in a first round home victory, 74-17…stayed home in the second round and took care of Warren with a 76-24 triumph…went out on the road for the first time in the postseason and came out on top, 71-49, over Etiwanda…moved on to the Anaheim Convention Center Arena and posted a 57-37 victory over Santa Monica in the semifinals…beat #1 seed Brea Olinda, 63-54 in the championship game at the Anaheim Convention Center Arena…with its CIF-SS championship, advanced to the CIF-State Division I playoffs and was given the #1 seed…took care of Fairfax 79-25 at home in the first round…for the second time in 10 days, played Santa Monica and got a 57-41 home win…played host to Narbonne in the regional semifinals and got a 59-38 victory…went to the USC Galen Center and got past Canyon Springs, 59-44, in the regional finals…overcame a 12-point first quarter deficit and won the state championship with a 59-47 win over Berkeley in Sacramento at the Power Balance Pavilion…Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, a senior on her way to the University of Connecticut, was named the CIF-SS Player of the Year, the Los Angeles Times Player of the Year; the Orange County Register Player of the Year, and the Trinity League Most Valuable Player…Mosqueda-Lewis averaged 22.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.6 steals in 35 games this past season…Jordan Adams, a junior, was named to the CIF-SS Division 1AA team, the Los Angeles Times All-Southland team and the Orange County Register first team…Adams averaged 10.2 points, 7.0 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game this past season…Alexyz Vaioletama, a senior who will play next year at the University of Southern California, was named to the CIF-SS Division 1AA team, the Los Angeles Times All-Southland team and the Orange County Register second team…Vaioletama averaged 10.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and shot 56.9 percent from the floor during the 2010-11 season…Kevin Kiernan was named the National High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year, the CIF-SS Division 1AA Coach of the Year, the Los Angeles Times Coach of the Year, and the Orange County Register Coach of the Year.

Soccer (Boys)

Won the Marina Tournament…Posted an overall 10-10-5 record, but came in fifth place in the Trinity League and did not qualify for the playoffs.

Soccer (Girls)

Finished second in the Trinity League…earned a first-round home game in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs and got a 2-0 shutout win over Redlands…played host to Esperanza in the second round the of playoffs, but lost a tightly-played contest to Esperanza, 1-0…Samantha Shaw, a senior who will play next year at Bryant University, was selected to the Orange County Register second team.

Water Polo (Girls)

Won the Trinity League and qualified for the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs…posted a 14-7 win over M.L. King in the first round the playoffs…was eliminated at home by Montebello in the next round of the playoffs, 7-5…Sophomore Mackenzie Barr was named the Trinity League Most Valuable Player…she was also selected as a member of  the CIF-SS Division 2 team and the Orange County Register second team.

Wrestling

Daniel Weinberg was the Trinity League champion in his weight class and qualified for the CIF-SS Individual Championships…Weinberg finished third in the CIF-SS Individual Championships which qualified him for the CIF-SS Masters Meet where his season came to an end…Daniel Garcia, Sean McCarthy, and Jared Torres all finished in the top three of their respective weight classes in the Trinity League and also qualified for the CIF-SS Individual Championships.
