MD Theatre Arts Makes a Scene!

The Mater Dei Theatre Arts program has a very busy month. Here are some of the highlights:

Shakespeare Festival – On February 18 and 19, 13 students participated in the 36th Annual Henry Kemp-Blair Shakespeare Festival at Chapman University. They attended workshops taught by college professors, including one about the First Folio. They saw a production of Macbeth and a sympopsium with the director, dramaturg and cast. We competed with monologues from Twelfth Night and Antony & Cleopatra. Our scene entry was from Act IV Sc 2 of The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Spring Play – Performed on February 24, 25 & 26, Aresenic & Old Lace was directed by Linda Seeley and featured a cast of 26 students. This dark comedy is based on the Frank Capra movie. Students rehearsed through out January and February to stage the play, and a crew built a wonderful multi-level set to represent the Brewster house. This production was held in the Monarch Pavillion and the Little Theatre served as backstage/greenroom.

Dr. Seuss Birthday Party – For the second year in a row, Sepulveda Elementary School has invited us to perform an original play based on the writings of Dr. Seuss. The Advanced Theatre Arts class has gone from page-to-stage by directing and designing the show. This is in honor of the National Read Across America Day, which is March 2 every year. ShortsFest – On March 10, 7:30pm in the Little Theatre, something awesome will happen. Students will perform scenes directed by other students and the Improvisational Comedy Club. They will also perform their scenes from the Shakespeare & Fullerton College Festivals, and also the audience favorite scenes from last fall’s ShortsFest. Tickets are $10 for this event.

Romeo & Juliet – Auditions for the 6th Annual Shakespeare in the Grotto will be on Tuesday March 15th in the Little Theatre. Interested students can download the audition form from the website, then prepare 4 to 12 lines from any Shakespeare work.  The event will be on June 4 and 5 at 4:30pm.

Fullerton College Festival – 31 Mater Dei students will participate at the Fullerton College Theatre Festival on March 18 and 19. They will compete in Monologue, Scene, Lighting Design, Childrens Theatre, and in Improvisational Comedy categories.

Senior Musical – The 37th Annual Senior Musical is currently rehearsing for their upcoming production of The Wiz. The Class of 2011 has over 100 students in the cast and are really excited about bringing this funky version of The Wizard of Oz to life. This musical recieved the Best Musical Tony Award in 1975. It performs on April 28, 29 & 30. Details about tickets are coming soon!
