The 600 Club

With his team’s 87-20 victory over Santa Margarita on Thursday, February 3, Kevin Kiernan, the girls’ basketball head coach at Mater Dei, notched his 600th career win at the high school level.  Prior to coming to Mater Dei for the 2007-08 season, Kiernan spent five and 11 years as the girls’ basketball head coach at La Quinta and Troy, respectively.  During his career, Kiernan was also the boys’ basketball coach at Savanna for one season and Troy for three years.  Not included in his 600-and-counting career high school wins, but on his resume, Kiernan was also the women’s head basketball coach at Cypress College for six seasons.

With Success Comes…

Chris Segesman, Mater Dei’s water polo head coach for boys and girls, has been selected to serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. junior national men’s team.  Segesman joins Robert Lynn and Guy Baker, who were named the team’s co-head coaches.  Segesman, a three-time All-American at Long Beach State, played on the United States Olympic team in Athens during the summer of 2004.  His Mater Dei boys’ water polo team has won three consecutive CIF-SS championships in 2008, 2009, (both at the Division 2 level) and 2010 (at the Division 1 level).  Mater Dei’s Bret Bonanni, the 2010 CIF-SS Player of the Year, and Jon Walters, will be part of the training group for the U.S. junior national men’s team, which, for the most part, will be comprised of collegiate players.

Quite the Extravaganza

Mater Dei recently hosted its 16th annual Nike Extravaganza.  The two-day high school basketball event showcased five girls’ games on Friday, February 4 and nine boys’ games on Saturday, February 5.  Prior to calling Mater Dei’s Meruelo Athletic Center home the past four years, the Nike Extravaganza has also taken place at the Bren Events Center on the campus of UC Irvine; Titan Gym on the campus of Cal State Fullerton; the Walter Pyramid on the campus of Long Beach State; Albert Gersten Pavilion on the campus of Loyola Marymount University; and the Anaheim Convention Center.  Current NBA players who have played in the event include Trevor Ariza, Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler, Al Harrington, Jrue Holiday, Brandon Jennings, Jason Kapono, Kevin Love, Tayshaun Prince, and Brandon Wright.
