Performing Arts – Fall 2010

This fall has been a very exciting time for Performing Arts at Mater Dei High School. We are thankful for the participation of all students, teachers, directors and coaches.

In September, we visited six schools on the Performing Arts Promotional Tour. Students from each area of our department performed and inspired Elementary students to consider attending Mater Dei for High School.

Through out the fall, each program in the Performing Arts Department had success in their annual events and competitions. Some programs also tried new apporaches to improving the experience offered to our students.

The Theatre Arts program collaborated with members of the English Department to join the CAPPIES organization. Our students now go to plays at other High Schools and compose critiques that then have a chance to be published by OC Register. In turn, students from other schools came to Mater Dei in October to review The Skin of Our Teeth, and two reviews were published locally.

Our Band program has greatly improved with the addition of new Band Director Tom Plunkett. Under his leadership, the band and color guard have been placing at competitions again. A huge improvement to the annual Christmas at the Corner, were the song choices made by Tom Plunkett. We are thankful to have him here at Mater Dei.

This weekend our Choral program will present the 21st Annual Madrigal Feast at Chapman University. The choir is bigger than ever this year with 205 students.

On Saturday, our Dance Team is traveling to Camp Pendleton to host Monarchs For Marines. They will provide a Christmas party for children and give away toys that were donated at Christmas at the Corner.

We know this coming New Year will bring even more great experiences for our talented students. Thank you for supporting the Mater Dei Performing Arts Department.
