President’s Message: The Facts About Financial Aid

Our country, state and county continues to feel the effects of the worst recession in 80 years and so many of our Mater Dei families have been negatively impacted by these current economic conditions.

● 10 years ago 22% of our MD families were receiving $750,000 in Financial Aid ( 50% of which was covered by the Diocese through the generosity of the Bishop’s Tuition Assistance Fund )

● Last school year 28% of our MD families received just over $1.75 million in Financial Aid ( with 17% covered by the Bishop’s Tuition Assistance Fund )

● For the 2010-2011 school year 38% ( almost 750 ) MD families will be receiving over $2.5 million in Financial Aid ( with 10% covered by the Bishop’s Fund )

In the past we could rely solely on the generosity of our Bishop and several wonderful, caring Mater Dei benefactors to support our families in need. However, as you can plainly see, the need has grown exponentially and now we need the caring support of the entire Mater Dei community more than ever.

Whether through a Financial Aid gift ( which is completely tax deductible ) to one of our MD Giving Circles, a pledge gift to the Monarch Legacy Endowment Fund, a legacy estate commitment to the endowment or a check written to our Annual Giving campaign, you will be directly helping a Mater Dei student receive the incredible gift of a holistic Catholic education, the opportunity to graduate as a Monarch.

Please know that every family who receives MD Financial Aid must pay their fair share of their own tuition after they have been approved and qualified for Financial Aid through Private School Aid Service. No Financial Aid is granted to any family until their financial situation is screened and analyzed by PSAS ( no exceptions ). So despite urban legend and internet myths there are NO MD student-athletes attending Mater Dei for free, or having their housing paid for or being provided with a free SUV to drive.

It is in difficult times like these that the true spirit of the Mater Dei Family shines brightest. So, if you are in a financial position to help support a Mater Dei family in need, through any of our Financial Aid fundraising efforts, please contact our MDHS Advancement Office at 714-850-9534. If you specifically wish to discuss a legacy estate gift or pledge commitment to the Monarch Legacy Endowment Fund please contact Allison Bergeron directly at 714-850-9532 or at abergeron@materdei.org.

May God continue to bless, guide and protect the Mater Dei Family.

Patrick Murphy, President

Great idea. This answers so many questions prospective families may have – questions I know we had before we made the RIGHT choice – choosing Mater Dei. I forwarded the link to several of my friends who have 7th & 8th graders.

  3. Armando Sanbrano says:

There is also the Alumni Heritage Fund (AHF) established to assist children and grandchildren of Mater Dei Alumni who need financial assistance. Remember the AHF if you are making a gift to Mater Dei High School.
